Like so many other inventions that were meant to be good and then were later twisted to an evil use, Ecstasy was initially created in 1912 to be a diet aid, an appetite suppressant. In later years, it was used by therapists to treat patients. It wasn't until the early 1990's when the formerly innocent pharmaceutical drug became something much more dangerous.

Ecstasy, in it's current form, is usually taken in it's pill form, although it can be snorted. The high that is produced lasts between 4-6 hours and causes relaxation, euphoria and suppression of the need to sleep, eat and drink.

As a result, many users experience serious dehydration after use, often accompanied by extreme exhaustion. These are minor when compared with the more serious health complications that are caused by using XTC.

The real danger occurs behind the scenes, in the brain itself. Ecstasy damages the brain's ability to naturally produce dopamine and causes the nerve endings in the brain to regrow abnormally, severing healthy connections and forming new pathways.

These new connections can actually alter the brain permanently, causing learning impairment, memory loss, and emotional damage.

In more long term side affects of the drug abuse of XTC, without the drug the user is no longer able to normally produce serotonin, and can cause serious cases of prolonged depression, anxiety and panic attacks.
